CHIGUTU VILLAGE
Kenya
CHOICE Humanitarian sent me back to Kenya this August to help coordinate a schoolhouse construction project. We had an eclectic group of about 15 volunteers. The Samburu Division where the village is located, lies SW of Mombasa, Kenya. There is no piped water, no electricity, one poorly maintained dirt road connecting the village to civilization, no health clinic, and not enough classrooms for the students. So in coordination with CHOICE, the villagers helped make a plan, hired a contractor, dedicated manpower, and set a goal to build 3 more classrooms. CHOICE volunteers fund 
the cement, brick-making machines, and corral (see pictures) for the foundation. These are incredible projects that allow two cultures to merge while the villagers take ownership and pride in the schoolhouse THEY build. We are just there to learn, make friends, and bond with the beautiful people of Kenya.

So much poverty, so little education, corruption, and poor living conditions. But it can be resolved one village at a time and that is where I rest my focus. I'm thankful for my education, solid government, a great wife that lets me travel to Africa for 3 weeks, and a great extended family.

Ben you're such a do-gooder, using your time off from school to go to Kenya and do humanitarian work. You're our hero!
